Carrot Bunny 🥕

A delicate baby romper in a light pearl shade enlivened by a scattering of bright embroidered carrots. The seamless, knitted-from-the-top design with raglan lines, long sleeves and soft cuffs looks neat and practical. A garter-stitch placket maintains the fastening’s shape, and the white buttons do not compete with the decorative motif. Stockinette stitch is worked evenly and the garment proportions are harmonious. The orange and green contrast against the cool neutral ground is particularly successful. The piece gives a professional impression, although the placement of some individual carrots could be made slightly more rhythmic.

The romper was most likely worked from the top down on knitting needles using a raglan construction with no set-in seams. After shaping the neck in garter stitch, the stitches were divided between the two fronts, the sleeves and the back, and increases were made along the four raglan lines. The main fabric is stockinette: knit stitches on right-side rows and purl stitches on wrong-side rows. The clean raglan diagonals create a calm fit and provide sufficient freedom across the shoulders. The front plackets were worked together with the main fabric in garter stitch, which reduces their curling. One placket has buttonholes formed at regular intervals, the other has five flat buttons sewn on. After separating the sleeves, the body was continued as one piece to the crotch line, then the work was divided into two pant legs. The sleeves and legs appear to have been worked in the round. The finishing cuffs are worked in 1×1 rib with a fairly elastic bind-off. The carrots were added onto the finished stockinette surface by embroidery close to the “loop-in-loop” technique, with small straight stitches for the green tops. The motifs are distributed asymmetrically but maintain overall visual balance. For this kind of embellishment it’s important to keep light tension on the embroidery thread and to secure tails neatly on the wrong side so the fabric does not pucker or irritate the baby’s skin. Final wet-steam blocking evens the stockinette, opens the raglan lines and stabilizes the plackets.

Hand wash or machine-wash on a gentle cycle at 30 °C in a mesh bag with a liquid detergent for baby clothes; do not use bleach or fabric conditioner. Fasten buttons before washing. Do not wring: gently press out water between towels and dry flat, arranging the raglan, plackets and pant legs to measurements. Do not dry on a radiator or in direct sunlight. If needed, steam from the wrong side through a damp cloth—do not press the iron onto the embroidery. Regularly check the security of buttons and embroidered elements.
