Cherry Cardigan 🍒

A delicate off-white cardigan with playful “cherries” looks very neat and truly shop-quality. The main fabric is worked in stockinette stitch with even gauge, the hem and cuffs are finished in ribbing, and a button closure adds practicality. Bright three-dimensional cherry appliqués successfully enliven the calm background: red with green form a juicy accent and make the piece memorable. Overall the work gives the impression of a high-quality children’s garment ready to wear or give as a gift.
Knitting method and techniques
The garment is worked on knitting needles, the main fabric is stockinette (also called stocking stitch) with fairly even gauge, visible in the uniformity of the rows. The hem and cuffs are finished in ribbing (visually similar to 1×1), which makes the edge springy and neatly holds its shape. The closure is made with separate button bands along the fronts: the buttonholes are placed vertically, and the band is knit more densely (often garter stitch or a tighter rib/double band) to stabilize the edge. A stand-up collar (or high neck trim) continues the band line and gives the piece a cardigan look. The cherry decoration is crocheted using mini-amigurumi technique: the balls are worked in the round with single crochet stitches and increases/decreases to form spheres; the leaves are separate elements (usually chains plus single/double crochet stitches along the chain). The elements are sewn to the fabric with invisible stitches; it’s important to secure the yarn inside the knit so the decor withstands washing and active wear.
Materials
- Main yarn: smooth light-coloured (fibre content cannot be determined from photo; check the label), approximately 200–250 g
- Yarn for appliqués: red and green (scraps about 5–15 g of each colour)
- Knitting needles to match main yarn (approximately 3–4 mm)
- Crochet hook for appliqués (approximately 2–3 mm)
- White buttons, 5 pcs
- Tapestry/knitting needle for assembling/sewing appliqués, stitch markers, scissors
Care instructions
Delicate wash at 30°C recommended (hand wash or wool/delicate cycle) with a mild detergent. Do not rub appliqués or wring: press out water through a towel. Dry flat, shaping the bands and collar. Iron lightly without pressing; better to steam gently through a damp cloth, avoiding strong steam on the dimensional cherries. Store folded, not on a hanger, to prevent stretched shoulders and fronts.
