Cranberry Patch Beanie 🍒

A cranberry-colored beanie with a neat turned cuff and a bright accent in the form of an attached “granny square” — a successful mix of a calm base and a lively colored spot. The stockinette looks even and dense, the ribbing holds its shape, and the decoration adds personality and a light vintage feel. Minor finishing details (a visible tail/end and slightly noticeable joins at decreases on the crown) can be easily brought to a store-finish level.
Knitting method and techniques
The piece is knit in the round on circular/double-pointed needles in a beanie format. The lower part is worked in ribbing (visually closer to 2×2) with a subsequent turned cuff: the rib gives a resilient edge and good fit, and the double layer across the forehead adds warmth. The main fabric is stockinette stitch. Photos show a fairly even gauge and stable yarn tension, without obvious "ladders" at the circular-round joins. The crown is shaped with wedge decreases: the decreases read as several vertical columns that converge to the center. The very top is slightly gathered at the moment — this usually happens with a too-steep decrease rate or with a large number of wedges. The decorative element is crocheted in a granny-square technique (groups of double crochet with arches/corners), made from leftover yarns in several colors. The motif is secured to the cuff by sewing around the perimeter; for the cleanest finish, use a mattress stitch (or invisible stitch) and bury the yarn tails to the wrong side. Final touch — blocking/steam finishing: light steaming through a cloth will even the stitches and emphasize the shape.
Materials
- Main yarn: burgundy (probably wool blend/acrylic), ~80–110 g (approx. yardage 200–300 m/100 g)
- Yarn for motif: scraps in several colors (white/light blue/yellow/orange/burgundy), total ~10–20 g
- Circular/double-pointed needles: about 4.0–4.5 mm (adjust to fabric density)
- Hook: about 3.0–3.5 mm (for the motif yarn weight)
- Tapestry needle for sewing the motif and weaving in ends, stitch markers
Care instructions
Hand wash or machine wash on a wool/delicate cycle at 20–30°C in a laundry bag, using a liquid detergent without bleach. Do not rub or wring — press out moisture through a towel. Dry flat, shaping the piece. Steam/block only through a damp pressing cloth, without pressing with the iron, especially over the granny square so as not to flatten the texture.
