Coral Lace 🔥

An airy coral jacket-shrug attracts with pronounced lace and a soft, slightly fluffy halo of yarn. The loose front line, shortened sleeves and shaped lower corners create a feminine, relaxed silhouette. The rhythmic botanical pattern reads well over a contrasting ochre dress. The piece appears light and fluid, although the shoulder lines and edges lack firmer shaping, and some areas of the lace show small differences in gauge.

Judging by the fabric structure, the garment is knitted with needles from fine fluffy yarn. The basis is a lace fabric with regularly repeating vertical repeats. The pattern is formed by yarn overs and paired decreases: most likely by knitting two stitches together with a right-leaning decrease and a slip-stitch decrease or left-leaning decrease. Narrow columns of stockinette stitch lie between the lace zones to support the shape and establish vertical rhythm. The construction resembles a loose cropped jacket-shrug with open fronts and sleeves about elbow-length. The shoulder section may have been worked as separate pieces and joined later or as a single piece from the back to the fronts. At the armhole line there is a noticeable change in direction and density of knitting, so the sleeves were probably knitted separately or picked up along the armhole edge. Side and sleeve seams should be joined with a mattress stitch without drawing in the lace. The shaped lower edge is created by distributing increases and decreases within the repeat, producing soft points and elongated front corners. A special dense facing along the front edge is almost absent: the edge is left light and flexible, which fits the character of the design but increases the risk of stretching. The neckline is finished minimally and requires particularly careful securing of the stitches. After completion such a piece requires delicate wet blocking. The fabric is laid out to measurements, each repeat is smoothed and the points are pinned until fully dry. Strong steaming is undesirable, especially if mohair or synthetic fibers are present: it can flatten the halo and irreversibly stretch the lace.

Hand wash recommended at 25–30 °C in cool water with a wool or delicate fabric detergent. Do not rub, wring or leave soaking for long. Rinse at the same temperature, gently press out through a towel. Dry only flat on a dry towel, shaping the fronts, sleeves and each point of the lace edge to original measurements. Do not dry on hangers, radiators or in direct sun. Do not use bleach or machine spin. If necessary, light steaming through a cloth is acceptable from a distance, without pressing the iron. Store folded, protecting the fluffy yarn from snags and moths.
