Coral Flame 🔥

A striking lace shawl in a rich coral-red shade reminiscent of tongues of flame. The expressive botanical pattern is built on alternating dense sections and large lace motifs, while the central panel beautifully organizes the composition. The wide border with elongated "petals" and sharp points is especially successful. The fabric looks light, opens up well after blocking, and is fairly even. The solid color palette emphasizes the complexity of the lace, although tidier arrangement of the border ends would make the silhouette even more professional.

The shawl was most likely knit with knitting needles from the upper central point with gradual expansion of the fabric. The construction is based on symmetrical increases on both sides of the central lace panel and along the outer lines. This scheme forms a classic triangular silhouette and preserves the mirror symmetry of the botanical motifs. Main techniques — knit and purl stitches, yarn overs, knitting two stitches together knitwise with right-leaning decrease, left-leaning decreases and, presumably, centered double decreases. The combination of yarn overs and directional decreases creates large leaves, diamond-shaped areas and vertical lace columns. Dense zones are worked mainly in stockinette stitch, which makes the lace elements read especially clearly. The wide lower border is worked as a continuation of the main fabric. The rhythmic elongated motifs end in sharp points; the edge could have been finished with an elastic bind-off or with a crochet finish forming chain-like picots. After knitting the piece was wet-blocked: the lace is well opened, however some points could be stretched more precisely. The work requires confident chart reading, constant monitoring of repeats and stitch counting. An error in a single yarn over or decrease would disturb the symmetry of several subsequent rows, so the technique corresponds to advanced level and above.

Hand wash recommended at no more than 30°C in cool water with a wool detergent. Do not rub, wring, or leave in water for a long time. After rinsing gently press the item between towels to remove excess water. Dry flat only on a level surface, arranging the central line, lace motifs and each border point; use blocking wires and pins if necessary. Do not dry on a radiator or in direct sunlight. Store folded, protecting from snags and moths; do not use hangers to avoid stretching the fabric.
